Patient Bayron Rivas Linares gets ready for surgery. Bayron is a medical student who was in a motor cycle accident three years ago. His many injuries, including a hip fracture, have kept him from completing his studies. Dr. Dorr and his team successfully replaced the affected hip so Bayron can return to school and finish his degree.
  • Arial Tent View: Hospital Bendana is very small-so they utilized the National Army and its volunteers to provide tents for our patients to stay in during their rehabilitation.
  • Time to go home-patient Angela Urrutia Cardona suffered from a broken hip for three years, severely limiting her ability to support herself. Operation Walk replaced her hip and restored her hope. Here she is pictured with hospital employee Jessie, our own Carolyn Miller, and Angela's sister.
  • Dr. Dorr takes time out from rounds for a hug from patient Maria Isabel Barahona Valle. Maria suffered from polio as a child and the disease had caused her hip socket to collapse. Dr. Dorr was able to reconstruct it and give her a new hip to help her walk without pain and less assistance.
  • Physical Therapist Vivienne Uytana and translator Pablo Ortega help a patient practice using her new knee utilizing the delivery ramp on the hospital grounds.
  • Surgeon, Dr. Audley Mackel, checks in with his patient Rocio Carolina Ruiz Molina before she heads home after her hip replacement surgery. Rocio suffered from hip dysplasia which resulted in a petrified hip. Dr. Mackel was able to replace this 21 year old's hip so she can continue her studies in Psychology at the University.
  • Part of Operation Walk's mission is to help teach students and staff at each hospital we visit. RN Cecilia Cayton helps a nursing student to change a patient's dressing a day after his surgery.
  • Teamwork is key for us to have a successful trip. Volunteers and hospital staff often only have a few hours to get to know each other before we start operating. In this photo-nurses, physical therapists, and student volunteers all work together to transfer a patient to her bed after surgery.
  • Surgeon Dr. Paul Gilbert makes time during rounds to talk with patients Maria Elena Aguilar Murillo and Juana Guarded Bulnes. It gives him a chance to address any questions his patients may have and to see first hand how they are progressing.
  • Packing and shipping supplies, equipment, and implants is a large component in a successful Operation Walk trip. Our Director, Jeri Ward, checks over trays of medical instruments before the truck comes to pick up our cargo.
  • Making sure our medical equipment and implants are sterilized, in good working order, and go to the right operating room is essential for success. Our Central Sterilization crew works closely with Implant Reps to assure that each tray has the right equipment and is ready when each surgical team needs it.
